Introverts! Do These 5 Things to be Happy, Land the Perfect Job, Find Your Soul Mate, Lose Weight, and Never Get Sick Again—But Not Really

Recently, I turned to Pinterest to try to get inspiration for my next blog post. I was hoping to have an idea jump out at me that would help me inspire people to make self care a priority as we enter into 2019.

So, here I was, scrolling through Pinterest when I realized that the self care genre is full of false promises. Does this sound familiar? These are all real blog titles:

  • Answer These Five Questions to Find Your Soul’s Purpose
  • Do These Eight Things Every Morning to Have A Great Day
  • How to Change Your Life by Changing Six Simple Habits
  • How to Manage it All
  • 20 Small Ways to Be Happier This Year

I’m not going to lie, I read these articles all the time because it’s nice to think that there’s a quick fix to all our problems.

If we just answer five questions, do eight things, change six things, we’ll be happy, content, perfect, rich, skinny…

But I can’t honestly sell you on a title that promises your life will change overnight if you follow specific self care rituals.

Because it won’t.

Introverts, These Things Take Time

Now, I’m a huge proponent of self care and self improvement. I take this process so seriously that I cut back to part-time at work so that I could focus more energy on my own personal growth. But here’s the truth:

Awakening, growth, self improvement—whatever you choose to call it—is messy.

This process is hard. It’s nonlinear. There’s no quick fix. In fact, truly focusing on your own self care journey will probably make things a lot harder before they get better—but boy is it worth it in the end.

If you’re doing it right, you’re going to be systematically breaking down walls that you built decades ago and reshaping beliefs you formed, probably before you could even write your name.

(How many times have you been told that your introversion is a problem that needs to be fixed? How often were you chastised by extroverts for wanting alone time?)

Your journey may lead you down an unconventional life path. Your family may worry that you’re not going to be okay, so it’s up to you to trust yourself.

You’ll have to strip yourself down to the barest version of yourself and slowly, ever so slowly, build yourself back up.

The Real Self Care Tips for Searching Introverts

If you truly want to grow to accept, value, and love every aspect of your introverted self, you’ll have to be willing to get a little messy.

During this process, you may want to find ways to self soothe. This is where things like exercise, journaling, turning off the TV, and spending time in nature can help.

But, understand that these things are not the catalyst for change on their own.

Don’t worry, I’ll be with you every step of the way, sharing tips I learned during my own 5-year journey and detailing the difficulties I come across as I continue to grow.

    1. Thanks Hayley! I agree, it’s incredibly frustrating. I used to get that all the time from my parents when I was a teenager, and it can be pretty damaging to the psyche over time.
